What happened to the photo archives of old newspapers?

Any suggestions?

Ploughing through the newspaper archives in the Cambridge Central Library and the http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ has opened the world of lots of old photographs from the newspapers of decades ago. The Central Library has a digitising machine that allows you to take screengrabs of articles from their extensive microfiche collection that Mike Petty and friends must have spent forever and a day working through.

The above is from the Central Library’s microfiche collection which I used their scanning machine to get a digital copy of. I’d love to know what happened to the original photographs and negatives of this – and of the newspaper’s collection that must have been huge.

These ones – also from the library illustrate John Belcher’s plans for the Cambridge Guildhall of 1898. These are photographs from the original newspaper.

So if anyone knows where best to look for the old photo archive, please leave a comment!
